About Power

The power of God is found in the gospel; the cross

  • Romans 1:16 – For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
  • 1 Corinthians 1:17 – For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
  • 1 Corinthians 1:18 – For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God
  • 1 Corinthians 6:14 – By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also.

All power belongs to and comes from God; it is seen in creation which all belongs to him; our appropriate response is to worship and be in awe

God exerts sovereign power over all things

  • Romans 4:21 – being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.
  • Acts 4:28 – They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.

God wants his power to be seen and known; 

  • Psalm 68:28 – Summon your power, God ; show us your strength, our God, as you have done before.
  • Psalm 77:14 – You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.
  • Psalm 106:8 – Yet he saved them for his name’s sake, to make his mighty power known.
  • Romans 15:17-19 – I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have said and done— by the power of signs and wonders, through the power of the Spirit of God. So from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ

  • 1 Corinthians 2:4 – My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,
  • 1 Corinthians 2:5 – so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.
  • 1 Corinthians 4:20 – For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.

The power of God is actively at work in me

  • Ephesians 1:18-21 – I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know…his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
  • Ephesians 3:20 – Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,
  • 2 Timothy 1:7 – For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline

In his power I have strength; by his power I have hope

  • Isaiah 40:29 – He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
  • Romans 15:13 – May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit
  • Ephesians 3:16-17 – I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith
  • Ephesians 6:10-11 – Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.  Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes
  • Colossians 1:11 – being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience

His power enables me to understand his love for me

  • Ephesians 3:17-19 – And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

His power is most effective in my weakness

  • Isaiah 40:29 – He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
  • 2 Corinthians 4:7 – But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.
  • 2 Corinthians 12:9 – But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
  • 2 Corinthians 13:4 – For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by God’s power. Likewise, we are weak in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him in our dealing with you.

His power is more powerful than any other power

  • Psalm 37:17 – for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous.
  • Acts 10:38 – how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
  • 1 Corinthians 15:55-57 – “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  • Colossians 2:10 – He (Christ) is the head of every power and authority
  • Hebrews 2:14 – Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil
  • Luke 4:14 – Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.
  • Luke 6:19 – and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.
  • Luke 8:46 – But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.”
  • Acts 10:38 – how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
